Kids' Mile Course Map

Here is the Kids' Mile course map! Fun for the whole family at the Flashlight 5K! Please sign up at flashlight5K.blogspot.com, and invite a friend! And don't forget, glowsticks for EVERYONE, as well as glow-in-the-dark kickball afterwards! #MegaStrong Cal's Angels

It's getting real!

This week we received our yard signs and placed them all over Elburn, Maple Park, Sugar Grove, Kaneville and West Aurora. Thank you to True Knack Graphics! They look great! Be on the lookout for them!

Also, this week we picked up a lot of the refreshments for the race. We currently have 240 water bottles on our dining room table, and lots of granola bars. I can't even begin to tell you how many glowsticks and how much reflective tape we have as well. Seeing all of it there makes it all seem very real! I can't wait!

Online Volunteer Sign-Up!

Ask and you shall receive! Many of you have asked how you can volunteer at the Flashlight 5K, and I am thankful for that because we need your help! Today, Coach Clarey, my mom, and I toured the course together to figure out the volunteer positions on and off the course. We then made an online sign-up with all of the positions described. The link is https://www.signupgenius.com/…/8050F4EABA922AAFA7-volunteer…
Also, below is a map showing the different volunteer zones on the course that are referred to in the sign-up.
Thank you again for being willing to help make this night a success and to help bring awareness and support to childhood cancer. #MegaStrong Cal's Angels

Welcoming War on Wheels home!

Today we got to cheer on our friend, Megan Sporny, as she join in the last 8 mile leg of the 2,499 mile War on Wheels! Cal's Angels organized this amazing ride down Rt. 66 to bring awareness to childhood cancer. I am proud of all the warriors we saw today, and would like to support them in any way we can. I was also able to meet with Stacey Skjoldager, one of the founders of Cal's Angels. I'm so thankful for her support of the Flashlight 5K. Only 12 more days! Please continue to spread the word! It'll be a fun night and together we'll help kids that need our support!

I can't thank you enough.

One of the things I've been struck with as I was gathering donations for my project was how many people's lives have been touched by cancer. And maybe because of that, so many people have been willing to help. Thanks to everyone for supporting my project, whether it's through encouragement, advice, spreading the word, advertising, loaning supplies, In-kind and monetary donations.
Special thanks for your generous monetary donations this week to: Dennis and Jean Nosek (my grandparents), Elburn Lions Club, Marjorie and Chet Cybulski, Bob Jass Chevrolet, Sal Occhipinti, Joy and Mike Brown, Charlene and Mark Thompson, The Home Depot, Alice's Place, and Jewel-Osco
Thanks to the sponsors that have offered In-kind donations this week: True Knack Graphics, Scott Kurth, Keson, and Race Time, Inc.
Thanks to BSN SPORTS for working with me on the race T-shirts. Thanks to Running Awards and Apparel for helping me with the race medals.
Finally, thank you to Jean Lundsteen, Connie Schweitzer, Coach Clarey, David Rohlman, Coach Bieritz, Sheila Abano, and my Mom, for all the support, advice, and encouragement you've given me throughout this project.
I couldn't organize this project without all of you. I thank you sincerely.

Be on the lookout...

...for these cool yard signs around town next week! Thank you so much to True Knack Graphics for sponsoring the Flashlight 5K!

Riding for Megan!

Just a few days ago, the riders for War on Wheels honored Megan! Every day they ride for a different group of kids. They are riding 2,499 miles from Los Angeles, California to Chicago over the course of 5 weeks! I am definitely going to the Celebration to welcome them home on Sunday, June 2! (More information about that on Cal's Angels Facebook page.)

Cal's Angels War on Wheels

Choosing an Eagle project is a big decision for any Scout. And choosing the beneficiary for your project is just as important. I had learned of Cal's Angels when they had done an awareness program at my school. After my friend, Megan, was diagnosed with cancer, I knew that I wanted to raise awareness about childhood cancer. When i visited their website with my mom, I realized that I had just found my beneficiary. They do so much good for kids and their families that need it. Please watch this short video on their War on Wheels Ride. It is truly inspiring. And this is just one example of the good work that Cal's Angels does on behalf of pediatric cancer.

Go Grey in May!

Go Grey In May! You may have seen on Facebook that some friends are helping to raise more awareness for Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors during the month of May. Since my project's goal is to raise awareness for the cause of fighting children's cancer, and to encourage people to support groups like Cal's Angels, I thought I would take part in "Go Grey In May!" too!
As you know, my friend, Megan Sporny, is fighting glioma cancer that was found in a tumor in her spine last October. I am so proud of her that during her fight, she is helping others in their fight. Not only is Megan helping to raise awareness for children's cancer by being the spotlight child for the Flashlight 5K, but she is also the patient champion for the Run for Gus 5K supporting Lurie Children's Hospital Brain Tumor Program. I am so proud of my friend, Megan, and admire her so much.

Online Sign-Up COMING SOON!! And Getting the Word Out!

Right now I am in the process of securing a timing company and online registration for the Flashlight 5K. Within the next week, I will make that decision and will post a link here and to my Facebook page. I think that having the timing company and online registration will provide a convenient and good experience to everyone involved in this event.

Also, several local businesses have offered to help advertise the Flashlight 5K. Be looking for posters in businesses and fliers on pizza boxes!! Thank you again to all who are supporting this event by advertising for us! If you would like to help advertise, please message me!

Thank you to this week's sponsors!

This week we have gotten some wonderful support and sponsors for the Flashlight 5K. I am very thankful for everyone's support through encouraging messages, donations of supplies and money and advertising. A big thank you to Anne-Marie Dan Mertes, Keson Industries and the Blackberry Bolt 5K for supporting the Flashlight 5K! Anne-Marie donated MEGASTRONG bracelets. Every runner/walker that signs up will get one in their racebag so they can be MEGASTRONG like my friend, Megan Sporny, and send her lots of positive thoughts whenever they see it. Thank you to Keson Industries for donating marking paint for our 5K course. And thank you also to the organizers of the Blackberry Bolt 5K for all of their advice and allowing us to put flyers in their racebags to advertise for the Flashlight 5K. The Bolt is a great race if you are looking for one to race on Saturday, May 4! If you or your business would like to support the Flashlight 5K, please just message me or comment below! All sponsors will be listed on the back of the race t-shirt and on display on posters at the race/walk. ðŸ™‚

Progress!

This has been a great week for planning my Eagle project! I am very thankful for all of the encouragement and support for it! I met with my athletic director, Mr. Rohlman, Coach Clarey, and my dad to talk about some of the details of having an after dark 5K on Kaneland High School's cross country course. Mr. Rohlman even turned on the stadium lights for me after sunset like they will be on the night of the race. My mom and I were able to walk the course to see what the light conditions will be. I've included a few pictures so you can see too. Imagine lots of Troop 46, Kaneland cross country and track runners, Accelerators, friends and family lighting the way along these paths with flashlights, glow sticks and cheering! The start of the race will be behind the stadium (the second picture), and the finish will be on the track. Mr. Rohlman said that we can play music on the stadium's loudspeakers! I am getting very excited for what will hopefully be a fun, positive, successful race for Cal's Angels!

The Inspiration for my Eagle Project

My Eagle project was inspired by a friend from my running club, Megan Sporny. Surgeons removed a malignant tumor from her spine last fall. She participated in intensive physical therapy in order to relearn how to walk and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Now, 5 1/2 months later, she just ran her first race since her diagnosis! Megan continues to fight her high grade glioma cancer with amazing strength, resolve and tremendous support from her family and friends. Recently, the Chicago Tribune wrote an article about Megan that I've linked here.
Because I would like to help Megan and other children like her in their fight against cancer, my Eagle project will be to organize a 5K race/walk and kids' mile race on the Kaneland High School Cross Country Course on Friday evening, June 14. I am so thankful for the support of my sponsors, my troop, my cross country coach and team, and my club friends. I will be donating all proceeds from this Flashlight 5K to Cal's Angels so that we can grant wishes to children like Megan, raise awareness about pediatric cancer, and raise money for research so that someday we can find a cure for cancer in children. (By the way, pediatric cancer only gets 4% of the national funding research money for cancer. But 100% of donations to Cal's Angels goes to pediatric cancer!)
If you would like to support this project, please message me!
